You can check the dependencies and reverse dependencies with apt-cache showpkg. This is a very common issue with installing packages meant for KDE, they depend on Qt libraries, which most Desktop Environments and Window Managers do not need/sure. So, my question is this: how do I disable all the stuff I don't want, or better yet, prevent it from installing? You can't seriously tell me that an UML editor has the samba plugin for some video player as dependency?! How do I keep my system exactly the way it is, just with umbrello installed? What am I missing? The same goes for the network cable et cetera. They ask me, when I plug in an usb device, what I want to do. However, the problem is, they don't just sit there. It's not like storage space would be an issue. But I guess it is OK if they just sit there on the hard drive and do, well, nothing. However, apt insists on installing kde-runtime, vlc, phonon and other packages which I don't want to use. Now I want to try out umbrello (after years of using bouml, which, sadly, is no longer maintained). I am using Debian with fluxbox as terminal multiplexer.

I want umbrello, I don't want pop-ups, tray icons, daemons loaded at start-up and so on.

There is a difference between me installing kde-full (the meta-package) and me installing umbrello (well there should be, anyways), even though the dependencies tell apt to install just the same files. What I was wondering is this: can I install umbrello with all its "real" dependencies, but without its dependencies messing up my system? That is, without getting pop-ups whenever I plug in my usb memory stick, without additional memory and cpu time usage at boot time and so on? Integrating multiple programs to a "system experience" is good and all, but at the point where firefox opens text-files in edit because at some point in time as was so bold as to intsall wine, I think the thought was taken a little bit too far. But does umbrello really depend on vlc-plugin-samba? No, it really doesn't and in fact it is one of the very few packages not installed with the -no-install-recommends switch (vlc, on the other hand, together with vlc-plugin-pulse and others, still get installed).īut as I said, I can live with that.

Dependencies indicate software re-use, which is a good thing. The link to meta-packages was educational, although I don't really understand how this solves my problem (are you suggesting that I install umbrello and then remove the rest again?). First of all I'd like to thank you for your fast replies.
